Just over a week ago I posted information regarding Yoli’s Alkalete product regarding how Alkalete works.  You can read the full post here: Yoli – Alkalete Wellness Challenge

Because you can get a FREE bottle of Alkalete to try, I decided to give it a shot based on a recommendation from a friend as well as the potential benefits I could receive in my cycling and running training.

Upon my initial order, I also added two extra bottles to allow for the loading dose recommended and to continue using/testing the efficacy of the product.

Along with the product, I received plenty of additional materials:

  • Loading Dose Instructions – explanation & directions for taking the product
  • Alkalete Wellness Challenge & Survey – info to track your results on the product
  • Information on Yoli’s other products
  • Acidity The Silent Killer Report

All of the information has been very informative and paints a great picture for one’s need to add Alkalete to their daily product consumption.  The biggest test though would be…does it work?

Testing Procedures

I wanted to ensure I gave Alkalete a fair shot and honest assessment so two weeks prior to testing I ceased taking one of my main health & endurance products: MaxGXL Sport

With one Cycling Endurance event coming up, this would be a great time to test my performance and how I felt leading up to the event as well as my performance at the event.

Over the summer, I have mainly been cycling and doing very little to no running at all, so with my next marathon training plan a few months away I wanted to test one of the benefits of Alkalete that I was most anxious to check out – Recovery!

During the first 1 1/2 weeks of using the Alkalete I started to run again (in the 100+ degree Texas heat!) to put my running muscles under duress and to gauge my recovery…all the while secretly worried I would end up injuring myself prior the the Cycle event coming up!

For the week of August 7-13, I ran rode two days (69 miles for the week) and ran two days (4 miles for the week):

  • Sunday, August 7th: 30 Mile Cycle
  • Tuesday, August 9th: 2 Mile Run
  • Wednesday, August 10th: 39 Mile Cycle
  • Friday, August 12th: 2 Mile Run

The following week of August 14-20, I did not ride at all and only ran (16.5 miles for the week) to really test the recovery assistance from Alkalete:

  • Sunday, August 14th: 5 Mile Run
  • Tuesday, August 16th: 3.5 Mile Run
  • Wednesday, August 17th: 4 Mile Run
  • Saturday, August 20th:  4 Mile Run

A jump from Zero running miles one week to 4 the next to 16.5 miles the following is typically way too quick a ramp-up in mileage when one has not run for many months.  What I found was that despite being slower than I was during my initial marathon shape earlier in the year, I was able to complete all these runs without injury — in the 100+ degree heat!  I could feel a bit of soreness in my legs in the hours following each run and I fully expected to feel the extreme pain of muscle soreness over the next few days, however, that never occurred!  It seemed that Yoli’s Alkalete was working!

The biggest test would be the following week and my performance at my upcoming cycling event.

Race Week

With my cycle event coming up on Saturday of this week and having been using Yoli’s Alkalete product for just over a 1 1/2 weeks I was feeling pretty good. From my run mileage I didn’t feel any huge gains in run performance however what results I did receive are far more important…I recovered quickly and was able to continue training!

The gains you receive from a workout are realized during the recovery phase and not the actual workout itself.

For this week leading up to Saturday’s event my workouts were as follows:

  • Tuesday: 40 mile tempo-pace ride
  • Wednesday: 4 mile easy run
  • Saturday: Race Day!

This year for the Hotter ‘N Hell Endurance Ride, I chose to ride the 100k (62 miles) instead of the full 100 miles.  Here are a few of my previous results in the 100k distance:

  • 2011 Tour d’Italia – 3 hours 38 minutes
  • 2011 Head for the Hills Rally – 3 hours 37 minutes
  • 2010 Cowtown Classic – 3 hours 39 minutes

My goal for this year was to ride the Hotter ‘N Hell 100k in 3 hours 30 minutes or less.  Anything under 3:30 would be considered a success while I would not be happy with anything over 3:31!

The Results

Saturday, August 27, 2011 arrives and I’m ready for the Hotter ‘N Hell 100k Endurance Ride.

Despite a mere 1.5 hours of interrupted sleep in a tent near the starting line, the morning of the ride came with great excitement and anticipation of my results and performance.

SUCCESS!!! Not only did I set a new PR…I shattered my previous best by 31 minutes!

Prior to the ride, I took 4 capsules of Alkalete about an hour before start.  During the ride, I followed my normal fueling strategy with Hammer Nutrition products and added 2 capsules of Alkalete each hour.  I still did not use my other go-to product MaxGXL Sport to ensure that this test would be solely dedicated to Alkalete.

Aside from feeling the effects of the lack of sleep after the first hour, I began to feel really good and rode the rest of the distance feeling stronger than I have ever felt on the bike!

After the ride, I did feel the effects of riding that hard for 3 hours in my legs as the tightness and soreness began to creep in.  Prior to driving home I took an additional 4 capsules of Alkalete and for the 2 1/2 drive home my legs felt fine.  I even started to entertain thoughts of going for a short run when I got home…although prior plans would not allow for that!

Upon arriving at home, I unloaded the car, took a shower and then got ready for the evening out with my wife!  All evening my legs felt as if I had done a short training ride rather than the all-out effort that they put out earlier in the day!  I truly felt great!

Before bed I took another 4 capsules of Alkalete just to ensure I would not wake up Sunday morning with that dreaded D.O.M.S. – Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness.  Today, I feel fantastic!  In fact, I am going to go for a nice steady 5 or 6 mile run as soon as this post is completed!

The final results…Alkalete works!  I am going to continue to use the remainder of Alkalete that I have with plans on ordering again!  I have one more Century ride coming up in September before the full marathon plan starts again so I am very excited about my results so far!
